ADOPTING AND REVISING LOGICS. CAN WE AND SHOULD WE?”

June 12th, 2018, 14-16

Aula 1-15
IUSS, Palazzo del Broletto
Piazza della Vittoria n. 15 – Pavia

Speaker: Carlo Nicolai – Utrecht University / King's College London

In the talk I discuss two well-known arguments concerning the adoption and revision of logical principles. The first, due to Carroll, Quine, Kripke, and several others, questions the very possibility of adopting logical principles. It aims to show that logical principles cannot be revised or adopted without circularity. I argue that, if there is vicious circularity involved in the adoption of logical principles at all, it is largely of non-logical character. The second argument concerns the costs of revising classical logical principles. It is often argued that the non-classical logician can restore classical logic for suitable (sub-)domains. This is the so-called recapture phenomenon. I argue that the usual formulations of recapture are not sufficient to restore all forms of classicality that are lost in the revision.
